Narratives as a bridge‐building practice? Exploring threshold dilemmas in climate maladaptation
Workshop by Therese Asplund and Anna Emmelin; Maria Magdolna Beky Winnerstam
Many initiatives, art works and projects indicate, as well as research pinpoint that humans communicate, learn, socialize and interact through stories and create individual and collective identity (Riessman, 2008). Embracing this knowledge of narratives and our practical knowledge of guiding processes, this narrative workshop explores how narratives enable bridge‐building between different climate change maladaptation story‐telling practices. Maladaptation refers to the potential negative consequences of climate adaptation actions. Based on the transformational potentialities of narratives (Hydén, 1997), dilemmas in discussions on thresholds on climate maladaptation, for instance conflicting perspectives on perceptions on reasonable trade‐offs, are in focus.
